Breaking the power of the generational curse
Bible Reading: Genesis 9:19-27
“19 These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.
20 And Noah began to be a husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brethren without.
23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.
24 And Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.
26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant.
27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant.” Genesis 9:19-27
It is a general saying that, no curse without a cause. According to a dictionary, a curse is a solemn utterance intended to invoke a supernatural power to inflict harm or punishment on someone or something. It is also defined as an offensive word or phrase used to express anger or annoyance.
However, a generational curse describes the cumulative effect on a person of things that their ancestors did, believed, or practiced in the past, and a consequence of an ancestor’s actions, beliefs, and sins being passed down.
A curse a terrible thing that has ruined many lives and caged many destinies. The calamity and suffering rules many families today is a result of a curse inherited from their parents or grandparents. For instance, after the flood, something happened which has an extraordinary effect on all the nations of the earth to date. Noah, a man that God used to build the Ark to delivered 8 people and other creatures from the flood became an instrument in the hands of the devil to raised a curse on his son that has become the generational curse till today. Ham the last child of Noah, failed to cover his father, whereas his older sons, Japheth and Shem, endeavored to cover the shame.
Historically, the continent of African is a descendant of Ham, while American, Europe, and Asia are descendants of Japheth and Shem. There is no doubt that African backwardness in all spheres of life is being traced to the curse on Ham that he would continue to be a servant to Japheth and Shem to whom belong American, Europe, and Asia!
“And he [Noah] said, cursed be Canaan [the son of Ham]; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.” Genesis 9:25.
To be sincere with ourselves, if you are an African, you need to break the effect of this curse. Some of the misfortune happening to many people today includes late in marriage, polygamist, barrenness, poverty, pregnancy before marriage, no academic achievement, failure in examinations, disappointment, slavery, sudden or untimely death, debt, financially bankrupt, backwardness, setback, sickness or afflictions, etc. are inherited curses from the fore-parents.
If you examine your life very well, you can see the trace of an inherited curse that caused the present challenges you are facing. A curse is a terrible virus that not only affected the person who inherited it but also transferred it to other generations and generations.
Your forefathers may have raised a curse on your parent, while the curse can be transferred into your life through the bloodline.
God “punishes the children and their children for the sins of the fathers to the third and fourth generation” Exodus 34:7.
“Just as a bird has reason to flee and a swallow to fly, So a curse does not come without a real reason.” Proverbs 26:2
Breaking the power of the generational curse is a serious matter. It is not a matter to joke with but one must pay attention to break it. We thank God for the work on the Cross when Jesus breaks the curse of sin.
God has a plan for your freedom from any generational curse you’ve inherited. Jesus Christ has paid the price that will shatter the chains of such generational curse forever! It will break in your life and stop it from passing on to your children!
It is clearly stated that “The word of the Lord came to me again, saying, ‘What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? ‘As I live,’ says the LORD GOD, ‘you shall no longer use this proverb in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” Ezekiel 18:1-4.
In John 8:31-36, we are free from the power of curse in as much as we abide in Jesus Christ. The death of Jesus Christ on the Cross is not only set us free from our sins, but has set us free from the penalty, the moral liability, and the ongoing curse of that sin! Through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, we have a new and better covenant with the Almighty God.
Jesus Christ has redeemed us from the generational curses being passed on from our forefathers to our fathers and us. This redemption comes as we understand that the root of our problems is in the spiritual realm. As we apply God’s Word and power to our lives, and we choose to walk in righteousness and obedience to God, the chains of bondage will be broken.
